Traditionally, schools have focused on academic achievement or the three “Rs” of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. In this presentation, a fourth “R” of learning is considered social relationships, as critical to the creation of safe and caring learning environments and ultimately as a foundation for academic success. Acknowledging a growing body of evidence pointing to the critical role of positive social relationships in education, we consider how children’s interpersonal competencies develop, the many different approaches to enhancing children’s interpersonal growth that can be implemented in school settings and the impact of such work on both social behaviour
and academic performance.
